Modern FMQ QAL: August

Since there is no official July CJMQG (though members are having a party - check Bigtent for details!), we are not having a FMQ challenge for July. Our next meeting is at the beginning of August, though, so that is when you can bring in results from the August challenge, share, and get in the running for the monthly prize.

This month, we are quilting up flowers and petals. There are lot of motifs to choose from; I quilted orange peels in addition to using some of the motifs suggested on the Google Doc. Here's another one (confident beginner level) that I stumbled upon recently by Christina Cameli.

Hopefully you're staying cool and turning on that sewing machine once in a while! In August, Elaine and I will be giving a presentation about quilt-as-you-go (the final steps to putting the sampler together). I will also be writing up a document to post online for reference and for those following along online. See you at the August meeting!

June meeting recap

Hi everyone! We'd like to remind you there are still some spots open in Janet's Bag Making Bootcamp workshop in August, and it is open to nonmembers. Registration for the Fall Retreat in November is now open for members.

Now let's take a look at our members' Modern Free Motion Quilting Quilt-A-Long blocks. This month's theme was different applications of straight lines.

Finished 2017 Bee Quilts were due at this meeting in order to be eligible for prizes. This included the Guild Bee, NewBee, and the Summer Bees. We had several finishes! Great job!

This month the Guild Bee made cute crab blocks for Kim. 

What we saw in Show and Tell:

After the break, we had a Sampler Fair. Four volunteer members set up tables to give a 20 minute presentation about a technique relevant to sewing and quilting. The remaining members split in four groups to visit each table in succession. Janet demonstrated making rope baskets, Carol taught how to face a quilt instead of binding it, Jamee showed us how to make a rod pocket and other hanging methods for wall quilts, and Maggie demonstrated some free motion embroidery. (Sorry I don't have any photos of this part - I was demoing and forgot to ask someone to take pictures for me!)

Modern FMQ QAL: June

Welcome to Month 6 of the Modern FMQ QAL! June's theme builds on those FMQ skills you've surely become more comfortable with by now. Yay for straight lines! Typically, they are quilted with a walking foot, but for some motifs, the FMQ foot is just quicker. With some practice, you might find yourself quilting more lines this way. This is also a really great way to practice following along previously quilted lines/retracing your steps.

We will be skipping a July challenge as the CJMQG does not have an official meeting. August's theme will be announced and posted on the Google Doc after the June meeting on Monday, June 11.

May meeting recap

First we would like to remind members of a few things. Finished quilts from the 2017 Bees (including Guild Bee, NewBee, and Summer Bee) are due at the June meeting. Quilts for our 2018 Pantone Color of the Year challenge are due at the August meeting. Signups are now open for Janet's bag workshop on August 25, please give or mail checks to Christine to reserve your spot.

Welcome to Month 5 of the Modern Free Motion Quilt Along! We are making "Swirls and Spirals" this month. This theme is an extension of last month; everyone is getting so much practice with curves! It can be tricky to achieve smooth curves, but if that is your goal, it will come with practice. Promise!
